The morning light had been baking on the dull, hunter green tent for a good amount of time now. It shook as its resident tossed and turned inside, unconsciously determined to fight the time of day as hard as it could. Slowly, Kitty’s eyes fluttered open. It was bright. Too bright for her taste. She closed them again. A quiet moan escaped her mouth as she sat up and got her bearings. What was going on? She groggily called to mind the events of the past night. She looked at her fingers… burnt. Damn. Kitty had been working with her props last night, as that was really the only time she could properly work with them. She had made her compound mixtures before sundown, and tested them for spark radius, color, and heat late into the night. Most worked fine, but one had burned much too violently for use in a performance, hence the burnt fingers. Thankfully, she had set up her own old tent much further from the rest of the carnies. She knew her props posed a fire hazard, and didn’t want to lose her standing with everybody as soon as she joined due to a careless mistake. Careless mistakes weren’t something you could afford when you’re starting a new job…
“Shit!” In a blur of color and a storm of cussing, Kitty realized she had slept in! She fumbled with the tent zipper, trying to get out and get to her clothes in the suitcase right outside the door. With a thud, she scrambled out of the tent in her underwear, quickly reaching into her bag to grab some clothes. Kitty clumsily hopped about the tent, trying to pull on her pants and tank top at the same time. This was no time for modesty! She had to catch up with everybody else!
She started jogging towards the cafeteria tent, pulling her hair up into a ponytail as she went. Maybe she would just go without breakfast… she had to make up for lost time after all. And it’s not like it was the first time she went without a meal. As she approached, she spotted that large panther guy staring up at the sky. She followed his gaze as she got closer to him, but didn’t see anything particularly interesting. Kitty thought about saying something, but felt awkward doing so because she couldn’t remember his name for the life of her! Being new to the group, Kitty had only been giving a quick introduction to everybody when she was initiated, and hadn’t had much conversation since. As she nervously stood next to the brawny feline, she caught sight of the inside of the tent. She spotted a couple others eating breakfast, and the smell was almost intoxicating. Unfortunately, the guilt of obviously being the last one up overpowered the pain of hunger, and she continued to linger outside the door. When Kitty heard the voice speak up inside the tent however, she couldn’t help but cautiously peek inside. Something about tension in the air? She shoved her hands in her pockets and shrugged. “Huh… I didn’t really notice anything weird or eerie…” Her comment wasn’t aimed at anybody in particular, but she did desperately hope somebody would take notice.
